摘要：

There are two classical vanishing theorems involving Dirac operators:

1. the Lichnerowicz theorem: if a closed spin manifold admits a Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature, then the A-hat genus of this spin manifold vanishes;

2. the Atiyah-Hirzebruch theorem: if a closed spin manifold admits a nontrivial circle action, then the A-hat genus of this spin manifold vanishes. In this talk we will describe some of the vast developments arising from these two results.
