摘  要: Road traffic injuries have been an important public health problem, especially in developing countries. Around 1.3 million people are killed on the roads each year. Indeed, road crashes shall become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030 if current trends continue. On 11 May 2011, Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 was launched across the world. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are recognized to be vulnerable road users, and they should be given more attention in road safety programmes. In this lecture, common road safety problems and remedial practices will be introduced. For road safety problem, indictors for quantification of road safety level, methods of road safety evaluation, and some puzzling phenomenon would be described. For road safety practice, a three-pronged approach that is adopted in Hong Kong will be demonstrated. Furthermore, a case study on bicycle injury in Hong Kong will be presented. Recommendations and implications to transportation infrastructure management, legislation and enforcement, and publicity and education could therefore be established.

报告人简介：

Dr. Sze received PhD degree in Transportation Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. Before returning to his alma mater, he had taken up research position at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, participated in a European Commission project on intelligent transport system, and a national project for the development of personal travel information system. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Sze specializes in traffic safety, injury prevention, statistical modelling, transport policy, and Intelligence Transport System. He has over 40 publications in international journal, referred proceedings and conference presentations. He serves as the guest editor of a special issue of Asian Geographer, and invited reviewer for more than five international journals include Accident Analysis & Prevention, Safety Science, Transportmetrica, International Journal of Sustainable Transportation, and Transport Review. Besides, he is the principal investigator of a funded project on drink driving behavior, and the co-investigators for two contracted research projects funded by the Hong Kong Government.
