摘要:Experience in the first World War showed that military communications in future wars would be transmitted largely by radio, and would therefore be open to interception by an enemy. This required efficient and complex encryption. In about 1930 the Germans introduced ENIGMA machines for this purpose. But already in 1932 Polish mathematicians had figured out how to break the German codes, and by purely mathematical techniques involving some elementary facts about permutations. I'll explain how ENIGMA machines worked, why basic machine design and German usage had fatal flaws, and how the Poles succeeded.
