Abstract: In the past thirty years, Higgs bundles have emerged as a useful tool in various fields such as Kahler geometry, mirror symmetry and the geometric Langlands program. In this course I will give an introduction to some of the basic ideas of Higgs bundles and their applications.

Lecture 1: Introduction to gauge theory and holomorphic bundles.
Lecture 2: Construction of the moduli space of Higgs bundles and nonabelian Hodge theory.
Lecture 3: The Hitchin integrable system.
Lecture 4: Relationship with Geometric Langlands.
